Stav – The Fighting Art of Northern Europe

Twenty years ago I published a small book called Stav, the Fighting System of Northern Europe. Apart from some booklets this is, to the best of my knowledge, the only book on Stav which has yet been published.

The book covered Stav as a martial art as we were practising it at the time including:

  • An introduction to Stav
  • The Stances
  • The Principles
  • The weapons, axe, sax and cugel
  • How to train in Stav

    • There are also fifty illustrations, both photographs (in which we look alarmingly young) and line drawings.

    This book has sold quite steadily over the years but I still have a couple of hundred copies left and it would be nice to sell them before I finish writing a new one. I realise that sixteen years is a long time so I have written a sixteen page supplement to go with the original book.

    The supplement covers:

  • How I met Ivar
  • How the book came to be written
  • What has changed and what has remained the same in the past sixteen years.

    • The supplement also describes aspects of Stav training that have only come into use since the book was published such as.

  • The longsword
  • The staff exercises
  • The nine guards with staff and spear
  • Developments in self–defence training

Even if you don't own a copy of the book but would like a copy of the supplement then ask anyway, I really don't mind, you will probably want to buy the book once you have read it.
